cheap Reality | The Light Project
We can manipulate the affects of illumination based on environmental experience. Light can set the mood and expectations of particular spaces. Light can manipulate our judgement and perception of what is and what is not visible. Cheap reality explores the perceived appearance of light through specific color illumination.
Cheap Reality contains 1 light bulb of each color: red, blue, and green. It is wired to allow the user to select their desired effect. If all the bulbs are on, the box will appear as if if it contains red, blue, and green, as well as cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.
Explore what it means to “Illuminate” and “Transform” in the design and construction of a light. By the very nature of these two terms, light illuminates (by shedding light) and transforms (from on to off). Build on these two terms by developing a rich, layered and experiential concept which engages the user. Material and construction methods at designers discretion.
I choose to focus on color because I wanted to explore the perception of light. Light is an interesting medium because its something that cannot be psychically touched. Ultimately, it comes down to filtering light as a way of sculpting it. In my early sketches, I was interested in kinetic movement. The more I thought about it, the more I began to see movement as literal translation light and movement.
